Arts-Active Students Excel Academically, Studies Show
A recent study conducted by James S. Catterall, Susan A. Dumais, and Gillian Hampden-Thompson titled ‘The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies,’ demonstrates better academic performance in a group of students who are somehow involved in arts. Whether it be drawing classes, studying the history of the art or simple art appreciation. The recently published article simultaneously summarises findings from 4 longitudinal studies during which the educational progress was observed, recorded and analysed.
Foremost, the “art enthusiasts” were observed to be four times more likely to be recognised for educational attainment compared to the ones who were not involved in art. That includes the grades, overall GPA, scores on tests, etc. Moreover, the groups involved in arts were more than twice as likely to stay at school and had a higher likelihood of being enrolled and graduating from college.
Besides scholastic achievements, there are mental benefits found as well. Research findings claim the cognitive enhancements in the brain of the ones who were participating in art classes throughout the school and college programs. Participation in arts is associated with developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which culminates in better academic achievement proving the aforementioned arguments. Developed cognitive skills could be beneficial across various subjects and disciplines. For such, the students from the arts-involved groups were more likely to participate in community service and civic activities, with 42% of arts students versus 26% of their low arts-involved peers. Same longitudinal studies show that arts-involved students have better long-term outcomes, including higher career aspirations and more civic engagement.
In conclusion, arts education creates a more engaging and supportive learning environment positively impacting both academic performance and social behaviour. You can read more about the study here. Let’s unlock a world of creativity and expand children’s knowledge in art with iMagoverse!
